Pension sponsors suffered a substantial setback in May – declining stock markets pulled down assets while declining interest rates pushed up liabilities. When the dust settled, gains from the first quarter of 2012 had been wiped out and both “model” plans we track now find themselves in slightly worse shape than at the end of 2011. Download

According to T.S. Eliot, “April is the cruellest [sic] month.” For pension sponsors in 2012, this is true so far, although “cruel” may be a bit strong. The combination of a modest decline in stocks and lower interest rates resulted in declines in pension funded status during April for both “model” plans we track . Plan A lost about 2% last month but remains 6% ahead of year-end 2011, while Plan B lost 1% during April but is still up 1% so far this year. Download

March 2012 Pension Finance Update

The first quarter of 2012 brought significant relief to beleaguered pension sponsors, undoing the majority of the pain inflicted in 2011. The two “model” plans we track both enjoyed a third straight month of improvement, with traditional “Plan A” improving by 3%, while “Plan B” gained 1%. For the year, Plan A has improved about 8%, and Plan B about 2%, compared with the end of 2011. Download

February 2012 Pension Finance Update

Through February, 2012 is two-for-two, allowing pension sponsors to recover almost half of the damage wrought in 2011. The two “model” plans we track both saw improvements in funded status again last month – with traditional “Plan A” improving by 2%, while “Plan B” gained less than 1%. For the year, Plan A has improved about 5%, and Plan B about 1%, compared with the end of 2011. Download
