November saw pension sponsors mostly tread water, consolidating gains from a strong October, in what is shaping up as a solid, if unspectacular, year for pension finances. Both model pension plans we track were close to flat last month: Plan A gained a fraction of 1% and is now ahead 4% on the year, while Plan B dropped a fraction of 1% but remains up almost 2% on the year through November. Pension sponsors saw an improvement in funded status during October, as both stocks and interest rates moved higher. Both model pension plans we track gained ground last month: Plan A picked up almost 5% during October and is now ahead 3% for the year, while Plan B improved close to 2% last month and is now up almost 2% on the year through October. September was a rough month for pension sponsors, capping a rough third quarter of 2015. Declining stock markets and lower interest rates hurt pension plans last month, eliminating gains from earlier this year for both model pension plans we track. Fears of a slowdown in China rippled through financial markets in August, producing drops in stock markets around the world and erasing most of the ‘cushion’ pension sponsors had built up during 2015. Both model pension plans we track lost ground in August – Plan A slipped more than 3% and Plan B lost more than 1% on the month – but both plans remain up about 2% on the year through August.
